Audio Installation, Performance, Drawing, Mixed media

Sefrou, Fez (Morocco)

My art is centred around observations and engagements with everyday life. I explore the potential for art to contribute social amelioration. The Sefrou project aims to pose the question of ‘ordinariness’ thought in the text in Tangier in the novel of prominent author Paul Bowles’s The Sheltering Sky (1949)*1, and critically calls into question the sense of discomfort which we have overlooked in daily life.

In this project, I am going to gather the voices from the local neighborhoods using cassette recorder. I get them to speak about the plan or schedule which they imagine the specific date and time such as day after tomorrow or a week later. Furthermore, I am going to collect to keep their watch until finish the exhibition. At the exhibition, I am going to show the installation that is the Paul Bowles’s text*1 and the watches and cassette recorders which audience can listen the local peoples voice by themselves. It is aim that the art work can trigger to emerge the question for the definition of their daily routine life and time as different time periods are overlapped at the same time, which are the future in the past, past in the present, and present. Although the act of working is very simple, it has a strong message and thought-provoking. In my performance, work involve myself and a commissioned volunteer, which are recorded in film, and other means of documentation such as text or voice.

" everything happens a certain number of times, and a very small number, really.

How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, some afternoon that's so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it?

Perhaps four or five times more. Perhaps not even.

How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless.”

The Sheltering Sky. (1949) Paul Bowles

'' すべてのことは一定の回数しか起こらず、
その回数は実際はきわめて少ない。
あと何回、子供の頃のある午後を思い出せるだろうか?
すっかり存在の一部となっているので、
それがなければ自分の人生など考えられない、というある日の午後を。
おそらく、あと4、5回だろう。そんなにないかも知れない。
あと、何回、満月を見られるだろうか?
おそらく、あと20回だろう。
それなのに、われわれは無限に見られると思っているようだ。''

The Sheltering Sky. (1949) ポール・ボウルズ
